After a successful 21-22 season of football, Bishop Verot has been training hard all Spring. The
new look Vikings look to catch a win in the 2022 Spring game against the Estero Wildcats. The
game is May 25th at Viking Stadium, Verot students will show out!
Let’s take a look at this past season for both Bishop Verot and Estero. Bishop Verot went 6-5 last
season, finishing 3rd in 3A Region 3. Some of their bigs wins include Cardinal Mooney twice (28-17
& 39-0) and Port Charlotte (30-16). Despite their 6-4 record, the Vikings ended their season with a
heartbreaking 38-0 loss to Berkeley Prep. Estero went 7-4 last season, finishing 1st in 5A District 13.
Freshman Mason Zehnder pointed out that these 2 teams are in the same district now, “Estero was
district champions of their district last year, but they’re in our district now.” Both Bishop Verot and
Estero are now in 2S district 16.
Since it’s the spring game, seniors will not be playing. Some notable seniors Verot is losing are
David Portu, Bruce Thompson, and Chris Graves. Portu and Thompson combined for 15 sacks this
past season. Chris Graves was very valuable to the Vikings, playing both receiver and corner.
Graves had 35 receptions for 583 yards and 6 touchdowns, he also rushed for 97 yards and 2
touchdowns. At corner, the position he will play at the University of Miami, Chris had 18 total
tackles, 2 interceptions, and 1 sack. His versatility was huge for Verot, they will certainly miss him in
the Spring game.
Some notable seniors Estero is losing are Kendrick Agenor, Jason Duclona, and Kirk Talley.
Kendrick Agenor rushed 152 times for 1357 yards and 16 total touchdowns. Jason Duclona
recorded 30 receptions for 576 yards and 6 touchdowns. And lastly, Kirk Talley, who not only rushed
for 323 yards and 6 touchdowns, but also recorded 417 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns. With
Estero losing a lot of their offensive star power, junior QB Matthew Wilson will have to look at his
other options. Wilson posted 1582 passing yards and 18 touchdowns.
With some of each teams’ best players on their way to college, the underclassmen look to step
up. Freshman Dawson Porter says Carter Smith and Wyatt Whalen are going to make a big impact
on the game. As a freshman, QB Carter Smith threw for 2025 passing yards and 15 touchdowns.
Smith also rushed 581 yards and 6 touchdowns. Wyatt Whalen was a beast at tackle this past
season, good luck getting past 6’5 280 pound Whalen. Some other notable players for Verot are
Trevontay Watts and Timmy Lawson. Watts posted 281 receiving yards and 11 solo tackles. Lawson
recorded 298 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns.
